Venue Move & Launch

A big thanks to you all for praying us and sorry for the lack of news updates recently. Here’s some highlights from recent months to catch up:

Firstly, thanks to the generosity of Salisbury City Church members, we have been able to partner with 4 local men to help them in the start up of a small business. Due to the crisis in the construction industry they have been unemployed for the last two or three years and with very little hope for finding work. We have printed flyers for odd jobs and window cleaning and called the business SAROVIPA. We’ve also purchased them a laptop and printer and one of our mission groups is involved in giving them on-going training in running their accounts, etc…

Secondly, we have moved from our city centre venue to a small theatre in Quevedo, Madrid. It is in a much more authentically Madrid neighbourhood with a lovely bar area and glass frontage onto a busy street. While increasing costs and workload on Sunday mornings the move so far seems to have gone very well. We’ve certainly seen an increase in Spanish speakers with us since the move. We also had the privilege of having our first baptisms in this period as well.

 Thirdly, we are about to publicly launch the church. Although we have been running public Sunday meetings for over a year now, we’ve never had the opportunity to do an official launch with publicity etc… We’ve named the church, ‘Iglesia de Cristo Salvador’, have a new logo, webpage (check out: www.cristomadrid.es) and publicity. We have a number of events to help launch the church throughout November including:

• an open mic evening in a city centre bar
• a 3 week sermon series, 'Is God real/dead/good?
• a quiz night with supper
• the launch Sunday with gift day
• a breakfast for local church leaders

There’s probably more that we could say, but the above are the main highlights. Thank you for partnering in prayer with us for the church plant. Please thanks God for all he’s doing amongst us and pray for the launch period and the events as well as for the guys in SAROVIPA. Many thanks.

Progress and Battles

Dear all,

Many thanks as always for partnering with us on this adventure by praying. As we move from a mainly British missionary group to a more established mission based church plant, we are experiencing changes which gladden our hearts and that stretch us in new ways.
We have had two new Spanish families come and join us and some youngsters as well. Our meetings are all in Spanish as they have been for some time and this is becoming less of a challenge as everyone's language learning improves.
Due to the influx of visitors, Kevin has begun a foundation course with five people on it and several more waiting for the next one. Kevin and his team also run an Alpha course which provides food for everyone but mainly men and women selling balloons etc, dressed as cartoon characters to earn money from tourists. Many of them have lost their jobs due to the financial ongoing crisis. Please pray for them to find work and in the meantime to find Christ.
The mission groups are developing very well and some saw visitors coming along to the Christmas Carol service. Please pray for the leaders of these groups, Dave and Tom, Sally, Geofree and Caroline, Joel and Andrés.
Andrés has come to join us from the ever so generous Mexican church under Oscar Suarez's leadership. Andrés has taken over leading the youth group from Iván and is proving to be very popular, he is planning on staying with us for a year and lives with the Bartlett family, so pray for mercy for him.
So it is with excited thoughts we ask you to pray for a new venue that we can comfortably fit in. The venue in the center of Sol has been excellent in its location and facilities and something similar but larger would be wonderful.
Please also pray as Kevin starts to develop his leadership team, which is becoming a priority with the growth and needing to spend time away from Madrid.

Avances y batallas

Queridos amigos,

Muchas gracias como siempre por compartir con nosotros en esta aventura a  través de sus oraciones.

A medida que cambiamos de un grupo de misioneros, en su mayoría británicos, a una pequeña iglesia más establecida basada en el misión, estamos tropezando con cambios que nos hacen felices y nos ponemos en un nuevos desafíos.

Tenemos dos familias españolas nuevas con nosotros y algunos jóvenes también. Nuestras reuniones son todas en español coma ha sido ya durante un buen tiempo y esto se ha hecho cada vez mas fácil a medida que el aprendizaje del español de todos ha ido mejorando.

Debido a la llegada de nuevas visitas, Kevin ha empezado un curso de cimientos con cinco personas y hay algunas más que están esperando el próximo curso. Kevin y su equipo también están organizando un curso alfa, el cual provee comida para todos pero principalmente para hombres y mujeres que venden globos etc. vestidos como muñecos de Disney para ganar algo de dinero de los turistas. La mayoría han perdido su trabajo debido a la crisis económica que atraviesa el país. Por favor, orad por ellos para que puedan encontrar trabajo y mientras tanto puedan encontrar a Cristo.

Los grupos de misión se están desarrollando muy bien y algunos de esos grupos sirvieron de conexión para que invitados fueran al servicio de navidad. Por favor orad por los líderes de los grupos, Dave y Tom, Sally, Geofree y Caroline, Joel y Andrés.

do a Madrid para estar con nosotros, de la generosa iglesia en México bajo el liderazgo de Oscar Suarez. Andrés ha empezado a dirigir el grupo de jóvenes, anteriormente dirigido por Iván, y es muy popular con los chicos. El está planeando quedarse  en Madrid un año Y vive con la familia Bartlett, entonces orad en especial por  gracia para él.  

Entonces, con mucha emoción les pedimos que oréis por un local nuevo en el que quepamos mejor. El local en Sol ha sido excelente por su ubicación e instalaciones, y algo semejante pero más grande sería maravilloso. 

Por favor también orad mientras Kevin empieza a construir un equipo de liderazgo, el cual se está convirtiendo en una prioridad con el crecimiento en la iglesia y su necesidad por pasar tiempo fuera de Madrid.

Apostolic Churches

We started to gather in a retreat centre the mountains north of Madrid late Friday afternoon. While the majority travelled the short distance from Madrid city centre by bus, others came from churches as far afield as Valencia, Huercal Overa, Portugal & England. This was a ‘church retreat’ with a difference, with Guy & Heather Miller (Commission) and Lee & Stacey Yarbrough (Nuevas Fronteras Mexico) ministering to us.

I am somewhat nervous to use the term apostolic. While believing in the biblical concept the fear of
being seen as hyping it up or conjuring up a wrong image of some white suited church guru/healer, means I tend to be cautious in its use. However, apostolic seems by far the most appropriate description of the ministry that we received during the weekend and its use is deliberate.

The churches represented received solid, biblical teaching, which was easily accessible and deeply relevant. It was highly interactive and fun with important themes covered from; Christ the Saviour, prayer, being with and reaching the lost in our culture, the tests of a red hot church. Above all we were encouraged and strengthened in our corporate mission together. Also included were seminars for both men and women, which were very punchy and practical in their impact.

However probably the most striking element was how it flowed easily from teaching into prophecy. We received significant words for Spain, for the churches involved as well as for individual members. It was one of the most significant displays of ‘word’ and ‘Spirit’ working powerfully together that I have witnessed as a Christian. It meant it was fast paced and highly impactful and, I believe, left many feeling excited at the prospect of being part of an ‘apostolic’ movement of churches.

In a period when Newfrontiers (our family of churches) has moved towards a variety of different spheres, it was refreshing to have Guy & Lee (leaders of different spheres) serving, preaching and prophesying together. It was a good model for all concerned and very effective in its apostolic impact. 

Iglesias Apostólicas

Empezamos a reunirnos en un centro de retiro en la montaña al norte de Madrid por la tarde un viernes. Mientras la mayoría viajaron la distancia corta del centro de la ciudad de Madrid en autobús, otros eran de iglesias tan lejanos como Valencia, Huercal Overa, Portugal e Inglaterra. Esto fue un retiro de una iglesia con diferencia, con Guy & Heather Miller (Commission) y Lee & Stacey Yarbrough (Nuevas Fronteras Mexico) ministrándonos.

Me pongo nervioso para usar la palabra ‘apostólico’. Mientras creo en el concepto bíblico, la preocupación de verse como exagerar hacia arriba o evocar una imagen equivocada de un gurú / sanador vestido en blanco, significa que yo tiendo a ser cauteloso en su uso. Sin embargo, ‘apostólico’ parece la descripción más apropiada del ministerio que recibimos durante el fin de semana y por eso la uso aposta.

Las iglesias representadas recibieron enseñanza bíblica y sólida, que era fácilmente accesible y muy relevante. Fue muy interactivo y divertido con temas importantes que se trataron de; Cristo Salvador, la oración, estar con y alcanzar a los perdidos en nuestra cultura, las pruebas de una iglesia apasionada. Sobre todo nos sentimos alentados y fortalecidos en nuestra misión corporativa. También se incluyeron seminarios para los hombres y las mujeres, que eran muy impactantes y prácticos.

 

Sin embargo, probablemente la cosa más llamativa fue la forma en que fluyó fácilmente de la enseñanza a la profecía. Recibimos palabras significativas para España, para las iglesias involucradas, así como para algunos miembros individuales. Fue una de los ejemplos más claros de cómo ‘la palabra' y 'el Espíritu' deberían funcionar poderosamente juntos que he visto desde que soy cristiano. Tuvo un ritmo rápido que era altamente impactante y creo que a muchos de nosotros nos puso emocionados con la realidad de ser parte de un movimiento de ‘iglesias apostólicas'.

En un temporada en que Newfrontiers (nuestra familia de iglesias) se ha movido hacia una variedad de diferentes esferas, era estimulante tener a Guy y a Lee (líderes de diferentes esferas) sirviéndonos, predicando y profetizando juntos. Fue un buen ejemplo para todos los interesados y muy eficaz en su impacto apostólico.

October blog

Without doubt it has taken me too long to write this blog. I have no excuse except the business of the autumn term. We have had a great summer, many people leave Madrid during the hot months of July and August so we decided to reduce our program. We met to pray every week and had some social events but little else.  At one event we invited all the guests from our recent alpha/Beta course to have a meal with us and get to know members of the church. Andy a member of the church shared the gospel and at the end two men responded to accept Christ into their lives. Juan one of them has started coming to church on Sunday afternoons.

We have seen this term new people visit us, the majority are from English speaking countries but some are from Madrid or South America.

We have begun with ‘The Big Question’.  Members of the church have written questions down that they would ask God if they had the chance.  It’s an opportunity to invite friends and to answer some of the more difficult questions of Christianity.

We now have four mission groups, a new intercambio for young students at the weekends and a youth group, led by Iván a young Mexican who lives with Kev and Ness.  One Friday the youth invite their friends over for a fun evening introducing their beliefs and the second week they have started a worship band, playing their instruments.

The three other groups, the intercambio 'Hablemnos+', the Alpha/Beta course and the 'English recipe' continue to grow and are great ways of making new friends and show Jesus to our city.

When we are not in our mission groups, we go to our three dimensional groups aka 3D. These groups are made up of three people and are for discussing the Sunday preach, praying together and holding each other accountable.

Something important is that we have chosen the name for our church ‘Cristo Salvador/Christ the Saviour’. It’s a name we hope causes no stumbling blocks for friends that come from a catholic background and at the same time speaks of the one we trust.

In November we are going to have a conference in the mountains with Guy Miller and Lee Yarbourgh. We have also invited other churches in Spain to come.  It is a great privilege to have these two men and their wives here with us in Spain at the same time.

Please pray with us that this event would be an opportunity for God to shape us and change us for His glory.

We also ask that you would join us in praying for more Spanish people to join with us in our church Cristo Salvador.

Octubre Blog

Sin duda me ha llevado demasiado tiempo para moverme a escribir este boletín. No tengo excusa de haber estado ocupado. Pasamos un buen verano. Mucha gente sale de Madrid durante los meses de julio y agosto así que decidimos reducir nuestro programa. Hacíamos una reunión de oración todas las semanas, y algunos eventos sociales y un poco más. Invitamos la gente del curso Alfa / Beta para merendar y conocer a la gente de la iglesia. Andy, un miembro de la iglesia, compartió el evangelio y al final dos de los invitados respondieron para aceptar Cristo en sus vidas. Juan, uno de ellos, ha empezado a asistir las reuniones dominicales.

Hemos visto en el primer trimestre nueva gente visitarnos, la mayoría son estudiantes de países anglohablantes pero unos son de Madrid y del Sur de América.

Hemos empezado con ‘la gran pregunta’. La dinámica de esta serie es ¿Si tuvieras la oportunidad de preguntarle a algo a Dios qué sería? Y todos los miembros  participaron al escribir sus preguntas. Es una oportunidad para invitar amigos y responder a unas de las preguntas más difíciles sobre cristianismo.

Ahora tenemos cinco grupos de misión, un nuevo intercambio con jóvenes y estudiantes durante los fines de semana, y un grupo de adolescentes dirigido por Iván, de México quien vive con Kev y Ness.  Una semana invitan a sus amigos para hacer una actividad divertida e introducir algo sobre la fe y la segunda semana empezarán una nueva banda de alabanza.

Los otros tres grupos son el intercambio ’Hablemos +’,  Alfa/Beta, y la Receta inglesa. Los grupos siguen creciendo y están haciendo muy buenas amistades y muestran a Jesús a la ciudad.

Cuando no estamos en nuestros grupos de misión vamos a nuestro grupo de ‘tres dimensiones’ o 3D.  Estos grupos consisten de tres personas y están formados para hablar sobre la predicación del domingo, rezar juntos y ayudarnos unos a otros.

Una Cosa muy importante es que hemos elegido un nombre para la iglesia ‘Cristo Salvador’. Esperamos que este nombre no vaya a causar conflicto para personas con trasfondo católica pero a la vez todo se trata de él que confiamos.

En noviembre vamos a tener un retiro en las montañas con Guy Miller y Lee Yarborough. Hemos invitados otras iglesias de España para venir y compartir en la conferencia. Es un privilegio tener a estos dos hombres y sus mujeres aquí en Madrid al mismo tiempo.

Por favor orad con nosotros,  que este evento sea una oportunidad para que Dios nos forme y cambie para su gloria.

También orad para que puedan llegar más españoles a reunirse con nosotros en la iglesia Cristo Salvador.
