Las celebraciones de Real Madrid en Puerta del Sol

Pido disculpas por el retraso de este blog, estar ocupado tiene la tendencia de distraernos de hacer estos tipos de cosas. Estoy agradecido a aquellos que me ha animado que siga escribiendo estos blogs de noticias.

La última vez que lo escribimos estuvimos en el proceso de mudarnos a un nuevo local en el centro de la ciudad. Nos ha salido muy bien; está en un buen lugar; del que vimos algunas de las celebraciones de Real Madrid después de ganar el Champions League (ved las fotos), pero también es un local perfecto para empezar nuestras ‘reuniones publicas’.

Con la mudanza a la ubicación central para nuestras reuniones dominicales, decidimos transformar los grupos pequeños. Por mucho tiempo habíamos tratado de iniciar de dentro de cada grupo ‘un proyecto’ por lo cual pudieran servir sus barrios. A pesar de los auténticos deseos de servir de los miembros de los grupos, fallamos en montar nada. Por eso, deshicimos los grupos de entresemana tradicionales y empezamos lo que llamamos ‘Grupos de Misión’.

Cada GdM tiene una misión especifica para el que existe para cumplir. Algunos tiene un propósito más evangelístico, otros son más prácticos en su servicio. Por ejemplo, recientemente 3 madres de la iglesia montaron un Grupo de Misión porque querían ayudar algunas otras madres del cole local con su conversación en inglés. Quedan los miércoles por las mañanas para hacer pasteles y hablar en inglés. A las madres que sirven les encanta. Todas las veces que han quedado han tenido un nueva invitada. Por lo tanto, un grupo de 3 cristianas y anglo parlantes queda con regularidad con 6 madres españolas para servirlas y desarrollar amistades.

Otro grupo ha empezado a organizar los cursos Alfa y Beta los lunes por las tardes. Un grupo de 4/5 cristianos sirve 7 o 8 invitados que son españoles o hispano parlantes semanalmente. Comen juntos, comparten la buena noticia y tienen un rato para hacer preguntas y comentarios. Un resultado raro es que algunos de los invitados regulares a este grupo son gente que se disfrazan como personajes de dibujos animados o de Disney por los turistas en Puerta del Sol. Mickey mouse, Bart Simpson y Bob Esponja son algunos de los personajes que asisten este grupo con regularidad (ved la foto).

Nos dan ilusión estos Grupos de Misión. Sin duda, parece que somos cada vez más misioneros y capaces de conectar con y servir a españoles y hispano parlante. Anoche fui a otro grupo nuestro que se reúne en un restaurante local. Había 5 o 6 miembros de la iglesia con 15 invitados españoles.

A la vez nos parece que Jesús entrenó a sus discípulos en una manera parecida – a través de la misión. Todavía tenemos un largo camino por recorrer, sobre todo por crecer con españoles, pero los GdM nos parecen un buen paso en esa dirección. De hecho, recientemente empezamos a formar una lista oficial de miembros y la primera persona que se inscribió Santi que es de Madrid. Confiamos en que él es el primer fruto de muchos otros.

Gracias por leer y por vuestras oraciones. Por favor, seguid orando por las Grupos de Misión que hemos montado, así como los que esperamos comenzar en otoño. También, orad para que Dios añada a más hombres y mujeres de paz a nosotros (sobre todo, españoles y hispano parlantes). Gracias!!

May Update

Apologies for the delay in this blog, busyness has a way of subtly distracting us us from doing these type of things. I'm grateful to those who have nudged us to keep writing these 'news blogs'.

Last time we wrote we were in the process of moving into a new venue in the centre of the city. This has gone well, it's a great location; a great place to watch some of the Real Madrid Champions League celebrations - see photos, but also a perfect place to start 'public meetings'.

With the move to a central location for our Sunday meetings, we decided to totally transform our small groups. We had, for quite some time, been trying to initiate within each small group a 'project' by which they would be able to serve their neighborhoods. Despite the genuine desire within the groups to serve, we failed to get anything up and running. Therefore, we scrapped the usual midweek small group idea and started what we have called 'Mission Groups'.

Each MG has a specific mission that it exists to fulfill. Some are more evangelistic in their aims, others more practical in their service. For example, one recent group was recently started by 3 mum's in the church because they wanted to help some of the other mum's at their local school practice their conversational English. They gather Weds mornings to bake cakes together but do it all in English. The mum's they are serving love it. Each time they have met a new guest has come. Hence just one group of 3 English speaking christians, now regularly meets with 6 Spanish speaking mums to serve and develop friendships.

Another group has started running Alpha and Beta courses on Monday afternoons. A group of 5 christians now serves around 7 or 8 spanish speaking guests weekly. They eat together, share the gospel and have a time for discussion, questions etc... One strange outcome is that a few regular guests to this group happen to be people who dress as disney or cartoon characters for tourists in Puerta del Sol. Mickey Mouse, Bart Simpson and Sponge Bob are just some of the characters who regularly attend this group (see photo).

We're excited about theses MG's. It certainly feels like we're becoming more missional and able to connect with and serve a lot more Spanish and Spanish speaking people each week. Last night I went to our other group that meets in a local restaurant. Along with 5/6 English speaking church members we had around 15 Spanish speaking guests.

It also feels a lot more like the way Jesus discipled people - by going on the mission together. We still have a long way to go, particularly by growing with Spanish people, but the MG's feel like a good step in that direction. In fact the person who recently signed up officially as our first member was Santi who is from Madrid. We're trusting he's the first fruits of many others.

Much More Abundantly Than We Asked or Imagined

A common prayer request that we have made in the last year has been to do with the search for a venue. It has been a search with some disappointments along the way and recently we were denied the use of a chapel in a school that we were hoping to use. However, God rules in Madrid like every other part of this world and He, "is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think..." (Eph 3:20).

The same day, that we received news of the chapel, an email arrived informing us about a venue in the centre of the city (to share with another church). The truth is that we were not planning to meet in the centre because the majority of Madrileños don´t live there. They live in the neighbourhoods outside of the centre. However, the frustration with the search for a venue forced us to consider it and during this process we realised that God wasn't only giving us a new venue but a new strategy.

The truth is that with this venue we will be able to gather people far more easily (this is a real challenge in a large city) and, at the same time, change the groups to be far more missional in their neighbourhoods. We would never have seen it without the frustrations that we have experienced looking for a venue. This is the effect of the God of Ephesians 3:20. In fact, we were thinking of launching the church this year and I believe this venue has catapulted us ahead of where we were expecting to be.

We are very grateful to you all for your prayers for a venue for us. God has answered them far more abundantly than we asked or imagined. We have begun to meet there fortnightly and within two months we will have our weekly Sunday meeting there. This will give us some time to change the groups and focus on the mission ahead as well as raise the extra funds required. We ask that you would continue praying for these things, for us and for Madrid.

Mucho Más Abundantemente de lo que Pedimos

Una petición de orar muy común que hemos hecho un el último año ha sido la de la búsqueda de un local. Ha sido una búsqueda con varias decepciones durante el año y recientemente nos denegaron la solicitud para una capilla en una escuela. Sin embargo, Dios reina en Madrid como todas partes del mundo y 'es poderoso para hacer todas las cosas mucho más abundantemente de lo que pedimos o entendemos,..' (Efe 3:20).

El mismo día, que nos denegaron, recibimos un email sobre un local en el centro de la ciudad (para compartirlo con otra iglesia). La verdad es que no planeábamos en tener reuniones en el centro porque la mayoría de los madrileños no vive allí. Viven en los barrios que están fuera del centro. Sin embargo, la frustración con la búsqueda de un local nos obligó considerarlo y durante este proceso nos dimos cuenta de que Dios no sólo nos estaba dando un nuevo local sino una nueva estrategia también.

La verdad es que con este local podremos reunirnos con mucha más facilidad (esto es un reto en una ciudad grande) y, a la vez, cambiar los grupos para que sean mucho más misional en los barrios. No lo habríamos visto nunca sin las frustraciones que hemos experimentado buscando un local. Esto es el efecto del Dios de Efesios 3:20. De hecho pensábamos en lanzar la iglesia este año y creo que el local nos ha avanzado mucho más que esperábamos.

Os agradecemos mucho por todas vuestras oraciones por un local para nosotros. Dios las ha respondido mucho más abundantemente de lo que pedimos o entendimos. Hemos empezado a quedar allí cada quincena y dentro de 2 meses tendremos una reunión dominical allí todas las semanas. Esto nos dará un periodo para cambiar nuestros grupos y enfocarnos en la misión que tenemos así como recaudar los fondos extras que necesitaremos. Os pedimos que sigáis orando por estas cosas y por nosotros y por Madrid.

Noticicias de Navidad

Lo siento mucho por el retraso de este blog. Es que ha sido una temporada intensa con muchas nuevos sin embargo no tenemos una gran excusa. Gracias a la llegada de Navidad que nos ha provocado informaros de lo que ha pasado y los planes que tenemos en 2014.

Vanessa empezó a trabajar en una escuela como auxiliar, es decir que ayuda a los profesores en las clases de inglés. Le encanta su trabajo aunque el viaje es muy largo. Va en metro, tren y autobús para llegar y volver. Resulta que los niños se quedan en el comedor a la escuela que cuesta mucho pero la casa (que es mi oficina) está tranquila durante el día. Trabajo mucho mejor sin todos los interrupciones.

Marco, que se quedó 9 meses con nosotros sirviendo la iglesia y estudiando conmigo, ha vuelto a Mexico. Marco fue una bendición y en noviembre le seguí a México para asistir Fiesta (la conferencia de las iglesias de Nuevas Fronteras en México). Lo pasé muy bien, hice muchos nuevos amigos y las amistades antiguas se fortalecieron. Gracias a Oscar Suarez, que es el pastor de Fuente de Vida en Guadalajara, prediqué a la iglesia en español. Mientras no fue la primera vez que prediqué en español, fue la primera vez en frente de tanta gente. Eran muy amables (como siempre) y lo disfruté mucho. Para el final de mi visita había conocido dos jóvenes que planean a venir a Madrid en el año que viene para servir la iglesia y estudiar conmigo, como hizo Marco. Hay algunas tramites para superar, pero esperamos que el primer llegue en enero / febrero.

La iglesia en Madrid va bien. Dios nos ha bendecido con alguna gente que ha llegado para pasar 6 meses o 1 año estudiando o trabajando en Madrid. La mayoría son inglesas. De mayor importancia es que tenemos más madrileños y hispanohablantes en nuestras reuniones. Empezamos el año orando por esto y, poco a poco, Dios ha respondido. Creo que algunos no son creyentes sino tienen mucha interés en la buena nueva.

Seguimos quedando en grupos distintas tres veces al mes y una vez al mes todos juntos. La mayoría de las semanas tenemos dos casas llenas. Desesperadamente necesitamos empezar un tercer grupo pero nos falta un lugar para quedar cada semana. Tenemos algunas ideas para superar este problema pero os agradeceríamos que orarais por esto. Por otro lado, hemos encontrado una capilla en una escuela que podríamos utilizar para las reuniones con todo el mundo junta. Pensamos en incrementar las reuniones allí a lo largo del año que viene hasta que tengamos 'reuniones dominicales' todas las semanas. Actualmente, comprueban nuestras referencias y esperamos que empecemos a quedar allí en el principio del año. Orad por esto, también, porfa.

Christmas News

Big apologies for the delay of this blog. It has been an intense season with lots of new news however we have no great excuse. It is thanks to the arrival of Christmas that has provoked us to inform you of what has been happening and the plans that we have for 2014.

Vanessa started working in a school as a language helper which means she helps the teachers as a native speaker in the english classes. She loves her job even though the journey is very long. She travels by underground, train and bus in order to get there and back. It means that the children stay in the school for lunch which costs a lot but the house, which is also my office, is quiet throughout the day. I work much better without all the interruptions.

Marco (who stayed with us for 9 months serving the church and studying with me, has reutrned to Mexico. Marco was a blessing and in November I followed him to Mexico in order to go to Fiesta (the conference for Nuevas Fronteras Mexico). I had a very good time, made lots of new friends and the old friendships were strengthened. Thanks to Oscar Suarez, who is the pastor of Fuente de Vida in Guadalajara, I got to preach to the church in Spanish. While it wasn't the first time preaching in Spanish, it was the first time in front of so many people. They were very friendly (as always) and I enjoyed it a lot. By the end of my time there, I had met 2 young guys that are planning to come to Madrid next year in order to serve the church and study with me, as Marco did. There is some paperwork to overcome but we are hoping the first will arrive in Jan or Feb.

The church plant in Madrid is going well. God has blessed us with a number of people that have arrived in order to spend 6 months or a year studying or working in Madrid. The majority are English. Of greater importance is that we have more Madrileños or or Spanish speakers in our meetings. We started the year praying for this and, little by little, God has responded. I believe a few are not yet Christians but they are interested in the good news.

We continue meeting in different groups 3 times per month and once a month we all come together. The majority of weeks we have two full houses. We desperately need to start a 3^rd group but we lack a place to meet each week. We have some ideas of how to overcome this problem but would be grateful for your prayers for this issue. On the other hand we have found a chapel in a local school that we could use for the meetings all together. We are thinking of increasing the meetings there throughout next year until we have 'Sunday meetings' every week. Currently, they are checking our references and we hope to begin meeting there at the beginning of the year. Pray for this as well, please.

Comisionados Para La Misión

Septiembre es un gran mes en Madrid; pereciera que todo el mundo que había estado fuera de su pueblo por el verano regresa en un finde semana. Todo el mundo está ocupado llenando las neveras, recogiendo loslibros para el colegio y charlando con amigos que no habían visto por dos meses.

Para el equipo las cosas no son diferentes, este año casi la mitad del equipo pasó un tiempo en su pueblo en el Reino unido y ahora están instalándose en el mundo del trabajo y la rutina del colegio. Durante el verano los que pudieron, fueron a Westpoint, donde tuvimos un buen rato siendo animados por Guy Miller, Micheal Ramsden, Mbonisi y otros. Aquí hay algo de retroalimentación de lo que pasó al haber estado juntos con nuestra familia de iglesias y lo que nos ha impulsado a la próxima fase de fundar una iglesia aquí:

Algunos de nosotros sentimos que Dios nos ha hablado directa y personalmente, sobre apretar el paso en cuanto al discipulado. Una persona sintió que Dios le dijo que le daría un corazón de valentía como el león en El Mago de Oz. A otra persona Dios le dijo que podía buscarle a él como a una presa, profundizando en oración,
leyendo su Biblia y compartiendo su fe. Otros que estaban afirmados en su llamado a Madrid y animados a volver,  específicamente escucharon que el temor no necesita ser nuestra protección.

Fue un fin de semana increíble en la presencia de Dios y muchos fueron animados por otra gente que  ha expresado su amor y ha estado a favor nuestro, sabiendo que somos parte de algo mucho más grande que nosotros, fueron momentos invaluables.

Entonces, ¿adónde nos lleva esto? A través de estos grandes momentos durante el verano hemos sido equipados para profundizar más con nuestros amigos, echar raíces más fuertes, decir que Madrid es nuestro hogar y alcanzar a la gente alrededor nuestro, que es la razón por la que vivimos. Estamos animados por
comenzar la construcción de un alcance semanal, haciendo cuestionarios con amigos, hablando sobre Jesús e invitando a la gente a un curso de Alpha, esperando que Dios traiga la cosecha. Gracias por todo tu apoyo y gracias por tus oraciones.
